Ontario Airport receives record federal grant for EV charging infrastructure

Ontario International Airport (ONT) has landed one of its biggest federal wins yet. The US Federal Aviation Administration is providing nearly $4.15 million, covering 75% of the costs for installing electric ground support equipment (GSE) charging infrastructure at Terminals 2 and 4. This marks the largest Voluntary Airport Low Emissions (VALE) grant ONT has ever received.

This funding allows ONT to move forward on its sustainability roadmap. By switching ground vehicles and equipment to electric power, the airport aims to cut carbon emissions and improve local air quality. The project is a crucial part of ONT’s broader strategy to modernize its operations while adhering to strict environmental standards.

The new charging stations will support a fleet of electric baggage tractors, belt loaders, and other GSE that service aircraft. With the FAA covering the bulk of the expense, ONT can accelerate its transition to a cleaner, more efficient ground handling ecosystem. Airport officials emphasize that this investment benefits not just passengers but the surrounding community as well.
