Nio Readies 60-kWh Battery Option for Firefly, Launch Set for October 23

Nio is preparing to broaden the appeal of its smallest EV brand with a bigger battery. According to Firefly brand marketing chief Pu Yang, who shared the plan during a user meet-up in Zhengzhou, Henan province, a 60-kWh pack will be officially introduced on October 23, with full pricing and upgrade terms saved for that event.
Until now, Firefly has shipped with a single battery choice: a 42.1-kWh unit built on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, sized around the model’s role as an urban commuter. The forthcoming 60-kWh option is described as a long-life pack supplied by CATL and is expected to push CLTC range to 560 kilometers. Because the pack is understood to use ternary lithium chemistry, it can store more energy within the same footprint — an important constraint for a car this compact.
What makes the announcement commercially interesting is that the upgrade is not limited to new buyers. Existing Firefly owners will also be able to move up to the larger pack, which could open an additional revenue stream for Nio while giving early customers a reason to stay within the ecosystem. Adding a second capacity also aligns Firefly with the group’s two other brands: the main Nio line pairs 75-kWh and 100-kWh packs, while Onvo sells 60-kWh and 85-kWh versions.
The timing follows Firefly’s integration into Nio’s battery swap network. On August 7, the group brought its first fifth-generation swap stations online across seven cities, and these sites — designed to handle wheelbases of up to 3.5 meters — were the first able to serve Firefly. Earlier fourth-generation stations could not accommodate the brand’s shorter body and wheelbase, so this was a meaningful step in tying the small car into Nio’s broader energy infrastructure.
Momentum on the sales side helps explain the product push. Firefly held a ceremony in Zhengzhou marking 90,000 cumulative deliveries, roughly six weeks after crossing the 80,000 mark at the end of August, and it posted a record 7,327 vehicles in September — up 26.9 percent year on year and 25.2 percent over August. Over the first nine months of the year, Firefly handed over 48,122 cars, about 16 percent of Nio Inc’s total volume, underscoring how much the compact line now contributes to the group’s reach in the small-car segment.
