New York City to Roll Out 700 Curbside EV Chargers

New York City is moving forward with one of the largest curbside charging rollouts in the United States. Officials have selected Brooklyn-based startup It’s Electric to install 700 chargers along city streets over the next three years, a move aimed at helping residents who lack access to private driveways or garages.

Curbside charging is a critical piece of the urban EV puzzle. Millions of city dwellers park on the street overnight, making home charging impossible. By putting chargers directly at the curb, the project could make EV ownership far more practical for apartment residents and others without off-street parking.

The decision also highlights the growing role of smaller, specialized companies in building out charging infrastructure. It’s Electric, headquartered in Brooklyn, will take on the installation work as New York pushes to expand its charging network and reduce transportation emissions.
