Microchip Taps Asahi Kasei Current Sensors for Arc Fault Detection Design

Microchip Technology has built a new reference design around arc fault detection that leans on machine learning, and it has selected coreless current sensors from Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) to handle the sensing side. The design uses AKM’s CZ39 and CZ3K series sensors.

The processing backbone is Microchip’s dsPIC33A digital signal controller, which runs both the signal processing and the inference algorithms on the controller itself. That means detection decisions are reached locally rather than being shipped off to another compute layer.

Arc faults are a recognized safety concern in electrical systems, and pairing current sensing with on-device machine learning points to a growing interest in faster, more localized fault detection for EV and power electronics applications.
