Land Rover Defender Pickup Could Ride on Stellantis Deal

Jaguar Land Rover is reportedly considering a pickup version of the Defender to enter the U.S. truck market. According to The Times, the British automaker sees an $80 billion opportunity in American pickups and may build the vehicle stateside through a joint venture with Stellantis. This would mark JLR’s first real push into a segment dominated by Ford, Chevrolet, and Ram.

The move aligns with JLR CEO PB Balaji’s cost-cutting strategy, which has already eliminated 4,000 jobs. A partnership with Stellantis would allow JLR to leverage existing manufacturing capacity and avoid steep tariffs on imported trucks. The Defender’s rugged image could translate well to a pickup, but it would face stiff competition from established players.

Stellantis has excess plant capacity in the U.S., making it a logical partner. For JLR, the appeal is clear: the pickup segment offers higher margins and brand loyalty. However, success is not guaranteed—past attempts by European brands to crack the American truck market have often fallen short.

If approved, a Defender pickup could arrive later this decade, but JLR has not confirmed any plans. The company is likely weighing demand, production costs, and the risk of diluting the Defender’s upscale reputation.
