Hyundai Patents In-Car Breathalyzer That Could Stop Drunk Driving Before It Starts

Hyundai has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a built-in breathalyzer system designed to detect alcohol on a driver’s breath. Unlike the bulky, aftermarket ignition interlocks that courts require for repeat DUI offenders, this system would be integrated directly into the vehicle at the factory.

Current ignition interlocks are often criticized for being cumbersome, easy to tamper with, and unreliable in extreme temperatures. Hyundai’s proposed solution aims to address those shortcomings by embedding the technology into the car’s steering wheel, where it can sample a driver’s breath as part of a routine start-up sequence.

The patent filing suggests the automaker is exploring ways to make alcohol detection more seamless and less intrusive. While it is unclear when or if this technology will reach production, the move signals a growing interest among automakers in proactive safety features that prevent impaired driving rather than merely punishing it after the fact.

As with all patents, there is no guarantee that this system will appear in a future Hyundai model. However, the application highlights how automakers are looking beyond traditional airbags and seatbelts to address driver impairment through integrated sensors and software.
