Helsinki Extends Electric Fleet Rules to Vans and Minibuses

Helsinki is broadening its push to eliminate combustion engines from the vehicles it operates. After starting with passenger cars, the Finnish capital is now directing its procurement of vans and minibuses toward fully electric models.

The shift does not stop at the city’s own garage. Companies contracted to move people or goods on Helsinki’s behalf will also be held to stricter environmental standards, meaning private operators working with the municipality will need to align their fleets with the city’s electrification goals.

By concentrating on transporters and minibuses, Helsinki is targeting the workhorse vehicles that keep municipal services running — a segment where daily mileage and predictable routes can make the switch to battery power more practical.
