GM Reverses Course: CarPlay and Android Auto Coming Back to Silverado and Sierra in 2027

General Motors has decided to bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto back to its vehicles, a striking reversal of its earlier plan to ditch the popular smartphone mirroring systems. The about-face will begin with two of its highest-volume models: the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2027 GMC Sierra. The announcement comes after the company spent years arguing that its own infotainment software—developed in-house—would offer a better, more integrated experience.

That strategy, first outlined in 2023, was supposed to start with GM’s electric vehicles before spreading across the lineup. Late last year, CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the phase-out would eventually reach gasoline-powered models as well, signaling a full commitment to the homegrown approach. But customer feedback and market realities appear to have changed the calculus. Drivers have long relied on CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless navigation, messaging, and media access, and many were vocal about not wanting to lose them.

The return of these features to the Silverado and Sierra—two of GM’s most profitable and popular trucks—suggests the automaker is listening to its buyers. While the company hasn’t detailed exactly how the reinstallation will work or whether other models will follow, the move marks a significant shift in GM’s software ambitions. It also raises questions about the future of its proprietary system and whether GM can still differentiate itself through in-car technology without alienating smartphone-dependent customers.

For now, the message is clear: the people wanted CarPlay, and GM is giving it back.
