GM Refreshes Truck Software, Gives CarPlay and Android Auto a Smarter Layout

General Motors is rolling out a software update for its full-size trucks that aims to cut down on distracted driving. The new interface reorganizes the most-used controls so drivers spend less time tapping and swiping on the central screen. GM says the changes are meant to keep essential functions within easy reach, reducing the kind of interaction that pulls attention off the road.
The update also adds picture-in-picture support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, letting phone-based navigation and media apps share screen space with the truck’s built-in system. That’s a shift for GM, which had previously taken a restrictive stance on phone mirroring across its EV lineup. The company has argued that its native software offers a more integrated experience, but the new layout suggests it is willing to meet drivers halfway.
By refining its own interface while giving popular smartphone platforms a more flexible presence, GM is betting that a hybrid approach will satisfy both camps. The rollout covers its best-selling trucks, where screen real estate and driver attention are especially critical. It remains to be seen whether similar updates will reach other models in the lineup.
