Germany Begins Building Fast-Charging Network for Electric Trucks Along Motorways

Germany has kicked off construction on a nationwide fast-charging network designed specifically for electric trucks, with installations set to line the country’s motorway corridors. The move marks a significant milestone for zero-emission road freight, which has lagged behind passenger EVs largely due to the lack of high-power charging infrastructure suited to heavy vehicles.

The planned network will consist of hundreds of charging points, intended to give long-haul electric truck operators the confidence to run routes without range anxiety. Unlike passenger car chargers, these stations must deliver far higher power levels and accommodate the large battery packs and strict driving-time rules that govern commercial haulage.

Building out truck-specific charging is widely seen as a prerequisite for decarbonising freight, a sector that accounts for a substantial share of transport emissions. Germany’s effort could serve as a blueprint for other European countries weighing similar investments in motorway charging corridors.
