European Truckmakers Risk Losing a Quarter of Electric Truck Market to Chinese Brands by 2030

According to a new analysis from Transport & Environment, European truck manufacturers are on track to surrender roughly 25% of the electric truck market to Chinese competitors by the end of the decade. The finding highlights how quickly the balance of power is shifting in the heavy-duty vehicle sector, where Chinese firms have been aggressively expanding their electric offerings.

While European truckmakers continue to push back against emissions regulations that are meant to accelerate their transition, the analysis suggests that their own hesitation is creating an opening for rivals. Chinese manufacturers have moved faster on electric drivetrains and battery supply chains, allowing them to gain ground in a segment that European companies have long dominated.

The report adds specific figures to a trend that has been visible for years: China’s head start in electric vehicle technology is now extending into commercial trucks. For European producers, the window to catch up is narrowing, and the T&E analysis indicates that without a more decisive shift, they could find themselves playing second fiddle in their own backyard.
