Europe's Electric Bus Market Grew 49% as Karsan Broke Into the Top 10

Europe’s electric bus segment expanded by 49%, according to a new market report, with Turkish manufacturer Karsan securing a place among the continent’s ten best-selling electric bus brands. The double-digit growth underscores how quickly transit agencies across Europe are retiring diesel fleets in favor of zero-emission alternatives.
The surge reflects a broader shift in public transportation policy. Cities from Paris to Berlin have introduced low-emission zones and procurement mandates that favor battery-electric buses, pushing operators to accelerate fleet replacement. That regulatory pressure, combined with falling battery costs, has created a favorable environment for manufacturers that committed early to electrification.
Karsan’s entry into the top ten is notable because the company competes against larger European and Chinese rivals. Its electric bus lineup, including the e-Atak and e-Jest models, has found traction with operators seeking compact, maneuverable vehicles suited to narrow city streets and feeder routes. The company has positioned itself as a full-range electric bus supplier, covering different sizes and duty cycles.
The 49% expansion mirrors similar momentum in other commercial EV segments, though buses present unique challenges: they require high-capacity batteries, depot charging infrastructure and long operational lifespans. Operators must balance upfront costs against lower fuel and maintenance expenses over a vehicle’s service life.
Looking ahead, the trend is expected to continue as more European cities set firm deadlines for fossil-fuel bus phase-outs. For established players and newer entrants alike, the race to supply electric buses is becoming one of the most competitive corners of the continent’s clean-transport transition.
