Enercity Expands V2G Testing From Pilot to Commercial Fleet Operations

Twelve electric vans operated by German utility Enercity are now discharging power from their batteries into the grid, part of a field trial that has already started returning revenue. The project signals a shift from small-scale demonstration toward fleet-level deployment of vehicle-to-grid technology.

Maximiliane von Butler, who leads energy innovation at the company, discussed the practical hurdles and upside of V2G when commercial vehicles are involved. The trial uses Enercity’s own fleet, positioning the utility as both operator and testbed for the approach.

V2G lets parked EVs act as distributed storage, sending electricity back when demand peaks. For businesses running large fleets, that capability could turn idle vehicles into an income stream, though questions around hardware costs, battery wear and grid rules remain open.
