Diesel Prices Are Up, But Running Waste Motor Oil in Your Truck Is Still a Bad Idea

With diesel prices climbing to uncomfortable levels, some truck owners are looking for ways to cut fuel costs. One idea that keeps resurfacing in garages and online forums is burning waste motor oil in place of diesel. While it might sound like a clever workaround, experts warn that it can cause serious damage to modern engines and emissions systems.

Waste motor oil contains contaminants that diesel fuel does not, including metal particles, soot, and chemical additives. These can clog fuel injectors, foul the combustion chamber, and destroy expensive emissions equipment like diesel particulate filters and catalytic converters. The savings at the pump can quickly disappear when repair bills arrive.

Modern diesel engines are precisely calibrated to run on fuel that meets strict standards. Deviating from that can void warranties and violate emissions regulations in many places. For most drivers, the smarter move is to focus on maintenance, driving habits, and possibly considering a more fuel-efficient vehicle rather than risking a costly breakdown.

While the appeal of free or cheap fuel is understandable, the risks far outweigh the short-term savings. Unless you are running a properly modified older engine designed for alternative fuels, it is best to leave waste oil out of your tank.
