Compressed-Gas Storage Grows Bigger, But the Math Still Doesn't Work

Compressed-Gas Storage Grows Bigger, But the Math Still Doesn't Work

A couple of years ago, skepticism toward compressed-gas electricity storage was easy to dismiss as premature. Now the hardware is real and the verdict is harder to argue with.

China has brought the 600 MW / 2.4 GWh Huai’an compressed-air project online, and Hydrostor has continued developing its own advanced compressed-air designs. These are genuine engineering achievements — not vaporware, and not small pilot plants.

The problem is that scale has not translated into economics. Building ever-larger demonstrators has not delivered the cost trajectory that would make compressed-gas storage competitive, so the earlier doubts look better supported today, not weaker.

The takeaway is not that the technology fails on technical grounds. It is that demonstration size and commercial viability are two different tests, and the second one is still failing.
