China's EV Market Hits Record High as Exports Take the Wheel

China's EV Market Hits Record High as Exports Take the Wheel

China’s plug-in vehicle market posted 1.64 million sales in August, an 18 per cent gain over last year, but the real story sits beneath the headline: the two drivetrain camps are moving in opposite directions. Pure electric models reached their strongest monthly performance of the year, while plug-in hybrids barely budged. That split suggests buyers in China are increasingly comfortable committing to a fully electric car rather than treating a PHEV as a stepping stone.

Equally significant is where those vehicles are ending up. Export volumes are no longer a side note in China’s electrification story; they have become one of its main pillars. Domestic demand alone can no longer absorb the pace of production, and overseas deliveries are now doing much of the heavy lifting for the country’s manufacturers.

For the global battery and charging sector, the shift matters on two fronts. More exported EVs mean more vehicles on European and other roads relying on public charging networks, while the waning momentum of plug-in hybrids hints that the industry’s long-term planning can lean further toward pure-electric platforms.

August’s figures do not point to a slowing market so much as a maturing one, with export channels now shaping the rhythm of China’s electric vehicle industry as much as domestic sales do.
