China's Auto Sector Reshuffles: GAC Eyes FAW-Toyota Stake, BYD Overseas Sales Jump 152%

China’s automotive landscape is shifting on several fronts at once, with state-owned groups redrawing joint-venture boundaries, an export-led sales surge at the country’s largest EV maker, and fresh capital flowing into battery and charging infrastructure.

At the center of the structural news is GAC’s move to acquire FAW Group’s 50% stake in FAW-Toyota. If completed, the deal would consolidate both of Toyota’s Chinese joint ventures under a single local partner, simplifying a partnership structure that has until now been split between two state-owned automakers. It is the kind of consolidation that speaks to how Beijing’s state-owned vehicle groups are rethinking overlapping alliances as competition intensifies.

BYD, meanwhile, posted a 17% rise in September sales, powered largely by a 152% surge in overseas volumes. That export figure is the headline number: with domestic price competition still brutal, shipments abroad have become the clearest growth engine for Chinese manufacturers, and BYD’s numbers suggest that channel is scaling fast.

Battery and charging infrastructure also drew significant commitments. Gotion and Volkswagen’s PowerCo plan to invest roughly €3.22bn (US$3.68bn) across three joint ventures covering batteries and materials — a signal that European and Chinese players continue to deepen supply-chain ties despite political friction. Separately, Geely has signed definitive agreements to take a 30% stake in Nio Power, Nio’s battery swap and charging unit, tying two major Chinese groups together in the charging business.

Taken together, the week’s developments point in a consistent direction: consolidation at home, expansion abroad, and heavy investment in the energy infrastructure that underpins electrification. How quickly regulators approve the GAC-FAW transaction, and how far BYD’s export momentum carries into the fourth quarter, will be the markers to watch.
