China's Agricultural Drone Fleet Operates at Roughly 30 Times U.S. Scale

Agricultural spray drones have moved past the experimental phase in China and into everyday farm use — at a volume the United States has yet to match. As of the start of 2026, China counted around 309,000 plant-protection drones in service, according to CleanTechnica, and those aircraft logged approximately 203 million hectare-treatments over the course of 2025.

That hectare-treatment figure is cumulative rather than a simple land area: a field sprayed three times over the same season contributes three treatments to the total. Even accounting for that method of counting, the gap between the two countries is striking, with Chinese drone operations running at roughly thirty times the American level.

The comparison points to how quickly unmanned aircraft have been absorbed into routine agriculture in China, where spraying from the air is treated less as a novelty than as standard equipment.
