Centurion Backs Western Australia's First Electric Freight Charging Network

A major logistics operator is throwing its weight behind an effort to build Western Australia’s first charging network dedicated to heavy electric freight. Perth-based Centurion has signalled its support for the plan, which is being led by Purpose Energy, a WA energy company that previously operated under the name Wind With Purpose.

The initial rollout would cover three charging sites, each equipped with 12 bays, positioned along the corridor linking Perth with Bunbury to the south. That route is one of the state’s busiest freight links, making it a practical first step for testing whether battery-electric heavy vehicles can handle long-haul work in the region.

Chinese-built trucks and battery-swapping arrangements could feature in the network, according to the plans. Swapping packs rather than waiting on a charger is one way operators hope to keep rigs moving on schedules that diesel fleets take for granted.

The project remains at the planning stage, with Centurion’s backing seen as a significant signal of industry interest in electrifying road freight across the state.
