CBAK Energy Moves Sodium-Ion Batteries from Lab to Production Line

Chinese battery maker CBAK Energy has shared results from its sodium-ion cell testing program and outlined plans to build out production capacity for the technology. The announcement marks another step in the company’s efforts to diversify its battery portfolio beyond the lithium-based chemistries that have long dominated the market.

Sodium-ion chemistry has drawn growing interest because sodium is far more abundant and cheaper to source than lithium, which could help lower costs for energy storage and entry-level electric mobility applications. CBAK Energy’s disclosure suggests the company is now looking past the research phase and toward commercial-scale manufacturing.

The company has not yet released a detailed timeline for when sodium-ion products might reach customers. Still, the move signals confidence that the chemistry can eventually support real-world deployments, even as lithium-ion remains the workhorse for most electric vehicles and grid storage projects today.
