California’s electricity mix keeps shifting toward renewables, and the latest tally puts wind, water, and solar above 56% of the state’s demand. The figure reflects years of steady build-out, from utility-scale generation to the rooftop solar panels dotting homes and businesses across the state.

The number comes from Stanford professor Mark Z. Jacobson, who directs the Atmosphere/Energy Program in the university’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Jacobson has spent years arguing that a wind, water, and solar — often shortened to WWS — portfolio can carry a modern grid, and California’s recent performance gives that argument a concrete data point.

The milestone matters beyond the state’s borders. As one of the world’s largest economies, California functions as a live test case for how far renewables can go when policy, investment, and consumer adoption move in the same direction. The remaining share of demand still relies on other sources, but the trend line is clear: each year, a larger slice of the state’s power comes from clean generation.
