BYD Weighs European Truck Production to Sidestep Import Tariffs

BYD is looking at assembling trucks inside Europe as a way to get around the import duties that currently apply to vehicles shipped in from outside the bloc. The Chinese manufacturer’s willingness to pre-empt tariff costs with local manufacturing signals that it is serious about positioning itself as a European company rather than purely an exporter.

The move fits a broader pattern for BYD, which has been steadily expanding its European footprint across passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles. Building trucks on European soil would let the company keep pricing competitive while insulating itself from the trade barriers that have complicated Chinese vehicle imports into the region.

Details on where such a plant might be located, what volumes are envisioned, or when production could begin have not been laid out. What the plan does show is a strategic bet: localising output is increasingly seen as the surest route into the European commercial vehicle market.
