BYD Targets Solid-State Batteries in Production EVs by 2027, Executive Says

BYD is positioning itself at the front of the solid-state battery pack, with an executive signaling that the company expects to launch its first electric vehicle using the technology as soon as 2027.

Executive vice president Stella Li described BYD as being in “the leading position” in the race to bring solid-state cells to market. According to the company’s timeline, the first BYD model equipped with this next-generation battery chemistry would arrive within a few years, marking a significant step beyond today’s lithium-ion packs.

Solid-state batteries are widely viewed as the next major milestone for EVs, promising potentially higher energy density, faster charging and improved safety compared with conventional liquid-electrolyte designs. Automakers and battery suppliers globally are investing heavily in the field, though mass production remains technically challenging.

BYD’s planned 2027 debut would place it among the earliest manufacturers to bring the technology to a production vehicle. Whether the company can hold that lead will depend on scaling manufacturing and keeping costs competitive, but the roadmap it has outlined is notably aggressive for the segment.
