BYD Commands 35.4% of China's NEV Exports in August as Tesla Falls to Fourth

China’s new energy vehicle exports saw a clear leader in August, with BYD shipping 183,746 units abroad and capturing a 35.4% share of the country’s NEV export market. That marked a gain of 3.2 percentage points over July, widening its lead over rivals.

The month’s ranking also brought a notable shift: Tesla dropped to fourth place among NEV exporters from China, according to the data. The reshuffle underscores how quickly the competitive order can change as domestic automakers expand their overseas footprints.

BYD’s export momentum reflects a broader push by Chinese NEV makers to grow sales beyond their home market, where competition has intensified. With its August performance, BYD reinforced its position at the front of that overseas charge, while Tesla’s slide to fourth highlights the pressure from rising local competition.
