Boise Schools Add Eight Electric Buses With Charging Setup

Boise School District is preparing to bring eight battery-powered school buses into service, backed by the charging equipment they will need, starting with the 2026-27 academic year. Across its 47 campuses, the district educates roughly 21,650 students, and the new vehicles will serve those routes under a three-way arrangement involving Durham School Services and Highland Electric Fleets.

Funding for the rollout comes in part from a $2.76 million award BSD received through the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program. That federal support covers both the vehicles and the infrastructure required to keep them running.

The move places Boise among a growing number of districts turning to electric school buses, which cut tailpipe emissions on routes that pass directly through neighborhoods and school zones. Charging hardware installed alongside the fleet is central to making daily operation practical.

With the buses scheduled for the 2026-27 school year, the district still has time to complete infrastructure work and driver training before students board.
