BMW Startup Garage Puts DeepDrive's Radical E-Motor to the Road Test

BMW’s startup incubation arm, BMW Startup Garage, has announced that it will begin road-testing an unconventional electric drive unit developed by the Munich-based company DeepDrive. The program gives the young firm access to real-world validation inside a major automaker’s development pipeline, an arrangement BMW uses to pull promising technologies into its own engineering orbit early.

DeepDrive’s design centers on a dual-rotor electric motor, a layout that departs from the conventional single-rotor architecture most EV motors use today. By arranging the magnetic components differently, the company claims gains in both power density and cost efficiency, with the added benefit of packaging the drive as a compact in-wheel or near-wheel unit. If the concept holds up under road conditions, it could open doors to new vehicle layouts that free up cabin space and reduce overall weight.

BMW Startup Garage operates as a bridge between early-stage companies and the group’s engineering teams. Participating startups typically receive mentorship, access to testing facilities and, in some cases, investment or development partnerships. For DeepDrive, the road test is a meaningful step beyond bench validation, since durability, thermal behavior and integration with a vehicle’s broader electric architecture only reveal themselves once a car is actually moving.

The news lands as major automakers race to squeeze more range and efficiency out of every kilowatt, and as interest in alternative motor topologies grows across the industry. Whether dual-rotor motors reach series production remains an open question, but BMW’s willingness to evaluate the idea on public roads signals that it sees enough potential to warrant a closer look.

Details such as the test vehicle, timeline and performance targets have not been disclosed. What is clear is that the partnership gives DeepDrive a rare opportunity to prove its technology under the scrutiny of a global manufacturer.
