BMW iX5 Hydrogen Nears 2028 Launch as Prototype Testing Ramps Up

BMW has offered a first look at prototype testing for its upcoming hydrogen-powered SUV, which will arrive in 2028 as the iX5 Hydrogen. The vehicle represents the next generation of the X5, and it will stand out as the only variant in the lineup to use a fuel cell powertrain rather than a conventional combustion or plug-in hybrid setup.

The broader X5 range will eventually be offered with five distinct powertrain choices, giving buyers everything from gasoline and diesel to plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell options. That approach reflects BMW’s strategy of keeping multiple technology paths open rather than committing exclusively to one energy source.

Engineering teams are currently putting early prototypes through their paces, though BMW has not yet disclosed specific performance figures, range estimates, or refueling times for the production model.
