AZL Starts Up JetBlast Rig to Stress-Test Battery Casings Against Fire and Hot Debris

AZL Aachen has brought a new piece of testing hardware online called JetBlast, designed to subject battery enclosure materials to the punishing conditions that can occur when a cell vents or enters thermal runaway. Rather than testing flame exposure alone, the system pairs an open flame with a high-velocity blast carrying heated particles, mimicking the combined thermal and mechanical assault a casing may face.

The company says early calibration runs have established the benchmark operating point for its Joint Partner Project, “Thermal Runaway Testing for Battery Casings.” That project was set up by AZL to give industry partners a shared, repeatable way to evaluate how casing materials hold up under extreme event loads.

By reproducing a more realistic mix of hazards than a simple burn test, the JetBlast setup aims to help engineers compare materials and designs on equal terms. The hope is that better test data will feed into casings that do more to contain the effects of a failing cell.
