Australia's First 8-Hour Grid Battery Goes Live with 144 Tesla Megapacks

Australia has energized its longest-duration grid battery to date, a facility in New South Wales that can discharge continuously for eight hours. The project, developed by RWE at its Limondale site, relies on 144 Tesla Megapacks and marks the first installation of its kind in the country.

Until now, most grid-scale batteries in Australia have been designed for two-hour discharge periods. Limondale’s eight-hour capability represents a fourfold increase in duration, a shift that could improve how the grid handles extended periods of low renewable generation.

By pairing Tesla’s Megapack units with a longer discharge window, the project signals growing interest in storage solutions that go beyond short bursts of peak shaving. RWE’s Limondale battery now stands as the longest-duration grid battery operating in Australia.
