Australia's EV Boom Outpaces Public Charging Infrastructure, Report Finds

A new report has found that Australia’s public charging network is not expanding quickly enough to match the country’s accelerating electric vehicle sales. On average, there are now 24 electric cars competing for every single public charger across the country, highlighting a widening gap between adoption and infrastructure.

The findings suggest that while EV uptake continues to surge, investment in charging stations has failed to keep pace. This imbalance risks creating bottlenecks for existing owners and could dampen enthusiasm among potential buyers who worry about reliable access to charging.

Industry observers say the pressure is particularly acute in densely populated urban areas and along key travel routes, where demand already strains available plugs. Without a faster rollout of public charging points, the report warns, Australia’s transition to electric mobility could face a serious roadblock.
