Australian fuel retailer Ampol has achieved a breakthrough in grid connections for electric vehicle fast-chargers. By leveraging spare capacity in the existing network and reducing power demand during rare peak periods, the company slashed a potential multimillion-dollar connection fee to just $90,000. This marks an Australian first and could significantly accelerate the rollout of rapid charging infrastructure nationwide.

The approach, known as dynamic or flexible grid connection, allows operators to avoid expensive network upgrades by actively managing their electricity draw. Instead of paying for a full-capacity connection that would only be needed occasionally, Ampol’s chargers can throttle back during times of high grid stress.
