Affordable EVs Reshape Europe's New Car Market as Sales Surge 45% in 2026

Europe’s new car market is undergoing a structural shift, according to a new report, with electric vehicle registrations climbing 45 per cent in 2026. The standout driver behind that growth is the affordable end of the segment, where budget-focused electric models have seen their sales multiply roughly seven times over.

The surge suggests that price, long cited as the biggest barrier to EV adoption, is finally being addressed at scale. Entry-level electric cars are no longer a niche experiment; they are becoming a meaningful slice of overall sales across the continent. That shift matters because it pulls in buyers who previously could not justify the switch from combustion engines on cost grounds alone.

Scandinavia is leading the charge, the report notes, continuing a pattern in which Nordic markets have consistently outpaced the rest of Europe on electrification. Their combination of supportive policy, mature charging networks and high consumer familiarity with EVs has made them a testing ground for the cheaper models now arriving in showrooms.

The findings point to a broader transformation of the new car market rather than a temporary spike. If low-cost EVs keep gaining share, manufacturers will face growing pressure to prioritise affordable line-ups over premium flagships, and the competitive map of the European industry could look considerably different within a few model cycles.
