Waymo's Robotaxi Fleet in San Francisco Racks Up Over 8,300 Parking Tickets and Nearly $1 Million in Fines

Waymo’s autonomous taxi service has accumulated more than 8,300 parking citations in San Francisco since the beginning of 2025, according to a new report. The escalating fines now approach $1 million, underscoring the operational challenges facing the company’s rapidly expanding robotaxi fleet.

The data reveals a striking jump from just 589 tickets issued to Waymo vehicles in 2024. As the fleet has grown across the city, so too has its citation rate, now exceeding 100 tickets per week on average. The figures highlight the friction between autonomous vehicle operations and existing urban parking regulations.

While the total fine amount is significant, it represents a relatively small fraction of Waymo’s overall operating costs in a major market. Still, the trend raises questions about how self-driving fleets interact with curbside rules designed for human drivers, and whether cities and operators need new frameworks to manage compliance at scale.
