Volvo's 2028 XC60 T8 Plug-In Hybrid Boasts 78 Miles of Electric Range

Volvo is preparing a major leap for its plug-in hybrid lineup. The 2028 XC60 T8 will deliver 78 miles of electric-only driving, more than doubling the 36 miles offered by the 2026 version. According to the company, that figure would make it the longest-range PHEV available to American buyers.

The XC60 has long been Volvo’s strongest seller, and the Swedish brand is positioning this updated plug-in variant as a ‘long-range PHEV.’ Doubling the usable electric range addresses one of the main gripes drivers have with plug-in hybrids: that the battery-only portion is too short for everyday errands.

By pushing electric range toward the territory of some full EVs, Volvo is betting that buyers who aren’t ready to go fully electric will still pay for a plug-in that can handle most daily trips without firing up the gasoline engine.
