Volvo's 2028 XC60 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrids Get Bigger Batteries and Google Gemini Infotainment

Volvo is preparing a mid-cycle update for two of its plug-in hybrid SUVs, the XC60 and XC90, with the 2028 model year bringing more battery capacity and a revamped infotainment experience. The Swedish automaker has not yet detailed exact pack sizes or electric-only range figures, but the move signals a continued commitment to PHEVs as a bridge technology alongside its fully electric lineup.

The bigger batteries should translate into more usable electric driving for everyday trips, reducing how often owners need to rely on the gasoline engine. For urban commuters, that could mean covering routine journeys on electricity alone more consistently, which is the core appeal of a plug-in hybrid over a conventional hybrid.

On the software side, the refreshed XC60 and XC90 will adopt new infotainment systems with Google Gemini integrated. Gemini is Google’s generative AI assistant, and bringing it into the cabin suggests Volvo wants more natural voice interaction and smarter responses for navigation, climate, and media controls.
