Volkswagen Retires ID.4 Name, Brings Tiguan Badge to Its Electric Lineup

Volkswagen has confirmed what many in the industry had been anticipating: the ID.4 is being phased out in favor of an electric model wearing the Tiguan name. The announcement signals a strategic shift for the German automaker, which now believes that familiar badges carry more weight with shoppers than alphanumeric EV designations — particularly in a marketplace where standing out matters more than ever.

Production of the ID.4 wrapped up at VW’s Chattanooga facility in April 2026, closing a chapter that began with its 2020 debut. Over its lifetime, the crossover found roughly 950,000 buyers worldwide, positioning it among Volkswagen’s stronger battery-electric efforts even if it never quite overtook gas-powered benchmarks like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V.

The upcoming ID.Tiguan is slated to reach European roads in early 2027, with the ID.Polo and ID.Cross filling out the rest of VW’s refreshed electric family. A US launch is also planned, though the company hasn’t locked in a timeline. Designers are keeping the final look hidden behind camouflage for the time being.

Inside, VW appears to be responding to a frequent criticism of the ID.4: the overreliance on touch controls. The ID.Tiguan is expected to adopt the cabin layout of the ID.3 NEO and ID.Polo, bringing back physical window switches for all four doors along with dedicated dials for volume and climate adjustments. An Android Automotive-based infotainment system will handle software duties. Whether the model will inherit the Rivian-co-developed software and zonal architecture destined for the entry-level ID.Every1 remains unconfirmed.
