Volkswagen Pulls the Cover Off the Electric Tiguan, Its New 600-km Crossover

Volkswagen has ended the guessing game and shown the world the ID. Tiguan, a battery-electric take on the nameplate that has long been the brand’s best-selling vehicle worldwide. The German manufacturer is placing big expectations on the newcomer, describing it as one of the most consequential electric models in its current push, and it will effectively take over the slot occupied by the ID.4 and ID.5 in the company’s zero-emission range.
The reworked body is joined by a thoroughly upgraded cabin, and for the first time a Volkswagen offers a 12-inch screen directly in front of the passenger alongside the 10-inch driver’s cluster and a central 15-inch infotainment unit. WLTP-certified range reaches as far as 600 kilometres, and the car is rated to pull trailers of up to 2,000 kilograms. Buyers get a choice of three drivetrains: two rear-wheel-drive configurations plus a 4Motion all-wheel-drive range-topper.
At the bottom of the line-up sits a rear-driven model producing 140 kW from a 58 kWh battery, although its towing figure drops to 1,800 kg. Stepping up to a 77 kWh pack unlocks either a 210 kW rear-drive version or the 220 kW all-wheel-drive variant. Practicality stays a priority as well: the rear compartment swallows 543 litres, and a 32-litre front trunk adds somewhere to stash cables or smaller bags.
Volkswagen has also leaned into nostalgia as a differentiator. An optional “Retro” instrument theme recreates the red-and-blue dials of the Golf IV, complete with a traditional speedometer and a stylised rev counter repurposed to show energy flow instead of engine speed. The infotainment system can likewise adopt retro skins drawn from six historic models: the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, first-generation Tiguan, Race Touareg and Beetle.
Standard equipment includes one-pedal driving, while the options list carries electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory and ventilation, a 480-watt Harman Kardon audio system and a panoramic glass roof. Pre-orders open this week in Germany and other European markets, with pricing beginning at €42,695. There is no word yet on when, or whether, the ID. Tiguan will reach Australian showrooms.
