Tesla Solar in 2026: New Panels, Powerwall 3, and the End of Solar Roof

Tesla’s residential solar unit has been on a long slide since the SolarCity acquisition in 2016. But with electricity prices rising across the U.S., the company is making a fresh push with a newly designed in-house solar panel and the Powerwall 3 battery, while quietly dropping its once-flagship Solar Roof product.

Earlier this month, Tesla officially retired the Solar Roof, the glass tile system introduced back in 2016. That product never accounted for a significant share of installations, and its discontinuation signals a strategic shift toward a more conventional and cost-effective panel-based approach.

The new direction focuses on integrating solar generation with energy storage, aiming to offer homeowners a more compelling value proposition as utility rates climb. By concentrating on standardized panels paired with Powerwall 3, Tesla hopes to simplify installation and reduce costs, potentially reviving its residential solar business after years of decline.
