Tesla Settles Fatal Autopilot Crash Case Before It Could Reach a Jury

Tesla has resolved a wrongful death claim tied to a 2023 incident in which a Model S running Autopilot struck a parked fire truck. The driver died in the collision, and his brother, who was riding in the car, suffered serious injuries. Rather than take the dispute before a jury, the company reached a confidential agreement filed in California federal court.

The settlement spares Tesla a public courtroom fight in which its driver-assistance marketing and Elon Musk’s past statements about Autopilot could have been examined by jurors. Terms of the deal remain private, and neither side has disclosed further details.

The case is one of several legal challenges surrounding Autopilot and its role in crashes involving stationary emergency vehicles. By settling, Tesla avoids a trial that could have shaped how courts and the public view the limits of its driver-assistance technology.
