Tesla Secures Nevada Robotaxi Permit — But Only for a Handful of Cars

Tesla’s ambition to operate a large fleet of robotaxis in Nevada has hit a significant regulatory milestone, although the scale is far smaller than initially envisioned. The company recently received a permit from Nevada authorities, but it covers only 10 vehicles, not the thousands Tesla had hoped to deploy.

A few months ago, Tesla submitted an application to operate up to 5,000 robotaxis in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, within a year. The permit approval follows a public comment period and internal deliberations, but the outcome is a limited authorization for just 10 vehicles. This cautious approach reflects regulators’ concerns about safety and readiness of fully autonomous vehicles.

Despite the setback, Tesla is likely to see this as a first step. The company has a track record of iterating its technology and expanding approvals over time. For now, though, the Nevada robotaxi fleet is limited to a modest start, and the broader rollout remains subject to further regulatory reviews and successful operations.
