Tesla's Solar Roof Exit Leaves Certified Installers Facing Six-Figure Losses

Tesla has pulled the plug on its Solar Roof tile business, and the contractors who built their operations around selling and installing the product are the ones footing the bill. According to Electrek, some certified installers say they invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into training, inventory, and marketing for a product that is now effectively gone.
The wind-down became official in August, when Tesla informed its network of approved installers that future shipments would consist only of standard solar panels. No gradual transition or long goodbye — just a notice that the tile supply was ending.
For smaller installation firms, that leaves an uncomfortable math problem: specialized crews, tools, and pipeline built for a product that no longer exists. Some told Electrek they are still working through the financial damage, with little to show for the money already spent.
Tesla’s retreat also raises questions about how much responsibility a manufacturer bears when it discontinues a product that partners have staked their businesses on. For now, the installers are left to adapt, and the Solar Roof chapter is closing faster than many of them expected.
