Tesla FSD May Soon Dodge Potholes — Six Years After Elon Musk First Promised It

Elon Musk used a weekend social media update to say that pothole avoidance is “coming soon” for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system. The pledge is a familiar one: the Tesla CEO made the same claim back in 2019, and drivers have been waiting for it ever since.

For owners, the feature would be a meaningful improvement. Potholes are among the most common and costly road hazards, capable of damaging tires, wheels and suspension in an instant — and a driver-assistance system that steers around them would offer a real safety and repair-cost benefit.

The gap between announcement and delivery is the crux of the story. Musk has a long record of promising FSD capabilities on optimistic timelines, and this particular one has now been recycled across several years without reaching customers. Until Tesla ships it, the update remains a statement of intent rather than a product feature.
