PDX Airport Adopts Overhead Charging for Rental EV Fleets

Portland International Airport in Oregon has introduced a novel overhead charging solution that allows up to 20 rental electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously without using up floor space. The system, developed by ChargePoint, is designed to streamline operations for rental car companies while maximizing the use of available terminal areas.

Unlike conventional ground-level chargers, this overhead setup keeps cables and units elevated, reducing clutter and potential hazards. It also speeds up turnover for rental fleets, ensuring EVs are ready for customers promptly. The installation is part of a broader effort by airports to support sustainable transportation and accommodate growing EV adoption among travelers.

The new system at PDX demonstrates a creative approach to infrastructure challenges, setting a precedent for other airports aiming to expand EV services without major redesigns.
