Ontario Airport bags $5.5M for electric ground equipment push

Ontario International Airport (ONT) in California is moving ahead with a major upgrade to its ground operations, thanks to a new injection of funds. The airport has secured roughly $4.15 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will be combined with its own investment to total about$5.5 million for the purchase of electric ground support equipment (GSE) and related infrastructure.

This funding is part of a broader effort to cut emissions at airports and transition to cleaner technologies. The electric GSE will replace older, diesel-powered vehicles used for tasks like baggage handling, towing, and aircraft servicing. In addition to the new equipment, the money will go toward expanding charging infrastructure and other zero-emission facilities across the airport.

ONT officials say the investment aligns with their sustainability goals and will help improve air quality for workers and the surrounding community. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution, while also saving on fuel and maintenance costs over the long term.

With this latest boost, ONT joins a growing list of airports across the US investing in electrification. The move not only supports environmental targets but also positions the airport as a forward-thinking hub for the region.
