One in 85 Used EVs Shows Significant Cell Voltage Imbalance, Says UK Diagnostics Firm

Generational, a UK-based EV battery diagnostics specialist, has released findings from an analysis of cell-level data gathered from roughly 10,000 used-EV battery tests conducted at hundreds of dealerships across the country. The study focuses on voltage variation among battery cells, which can signal potential degradation or performance issues.
On average, the median vehicle displayed an 8 millivolt difference between its highest and lowest cell voltages. However, about one in 85 tests revealed an imbalance exceeding 50 millivolts, a threshold that may warrant closer attention. The company suggests that consistent monitoring of such imbalances could help buyers and sellers make more informed decisions about used EV purchases.
The findings underscore the importance of thorough battery diagnostics in the pre-owned EV market, as battery health remains a key factor in vehicle value and longevity. Generational’s data adds to a growing body of evidence that cell-level analysis can reveal underlying issues not apparent in standard state-of-health checks.
