NYC Taps Maverick to Build Out Permanent Curbside EV Charging Network

New York City is moving its curbside charging efforts from a temporary trial into a permanent fixture. it’s electric, the company behind the PlugNYC program, has brought Maverick Construction on board to handle design, engineering and installation work for the rollout across all five boroughs.

The selection follows it’s electric’s August award from the City of New York and the New York Power Authority, which calls for roughly 600 additional curbside chargers to be installed within three years. The new hardware will supersede the pilot equipment currently in place.

Deployment will concentrate on areas with dense populations of Taxi and Limousine Commission drivers and scarce off-street parking, since those motorists have no practical way to charge at home. The city’s Green Rides Initiative, which requires TLC-licensed Uber and Lyft trips to be electric or accessible by 2030, gives the buildout added urgency.

Maverick brings decades of Make Ready design and utility coordination experience to the job, and the two firms previously teamed up on Boston’s first-of-its-kind curbside installation in 2025.
