Norway's August EV Market Share Hits All-Time High of 98.7%

Norway continues to set the global benchmark for electric vehicle adoption, with August data showing plug-in models accounted for a record 98.7 percent of all new passenger car sales. The figure marks another incremental step forward in the Nordic nation’s aggressive push toward zero-emission mobility, building on previous monthly records that already positioned it as the world’s leader in EV penetration.
The overall passenger car market in Norway experienced a slight decline last month, but that did not dampen the momentum for battery-electric vehicles. In fact, six of the ten best-selling brands managed to grow their volumes year-over-year, signaling that consumer preference is firmly anchored on electric drivetrains even as overall demand softens. Volkswagen emerged as the top-selling brand, with Toyota and Xpeng completing the podium.
Industry watchers note that Norway’s high EV share is driven by a combination of generous tax incentives, a well-developed charging network, and a broad model lineup from automakers. The latest figures reinforce a trend that began several years ago, when Norway first crossed the 50 percent threshold for EV share, and they suggest that the country is on track to achieve its goal of selling only zero-emission passenger cars by as early as next year.
