Nissan Refines e-Power Hybrid System to Slash Emissions, Outperform Renault and Toyota

Nissan has introduced an updated version of its e-Power hybrid powertrain that delivers lower emissions than comparable systems from Renault and Toyota, according to Automotive News. The e-Power setup is unusual in that its gasoline engine never drives the wheels directly; instead, it functions purely as a generator to produce electricity for the electric motor that actually propels the vehicle.

This serial hybrid approach lets Nissan tune the engine to run within its most efficient operating window, which helps explain the improved emissions figures. By keeping the internal combustion component isolated from the drivetrain, the system can also deliver the smooth, instant acceleration characteristics that drivers associate with electric vehicles, without requiring a plug-in battery.

The refinement puts Nissan’s hybrid offering in a stronger competitive position against the established hybrid lineups from Renault and Toyota, two brands that have long held a significant share of the electrified vehicle market. Nissan’s decision to continue developing e-Power alongside its battery-electric models reflects a dual-track strategy aimed at serving markets where charging infrastructure remains limited.

Automotive News notes that the emissions improvements come from the latest iteration of the technology, though specific figures and model availability were not detailed in the report.
