Nissan Kicks Goes Series Hybrid for Europe, Built in Sunderland

Nissan is expanding its European lineup with a new Kicks model, but this one takes a different path from the all-electric Leaf. Instead of a battery-only powertrain, the Kicks will arrive as a full series hybrid, meaning its combustion engine serves as a generator rather than driving the wheels directly. The vehicle will be assembled at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK, the same facility that produces the Leaf.

The series hybrid approach sets the Kicks apart from conventional parallel hybrids, where both the engine and electric motor can power the wheels. In a series setup, the engine’s sole job is to produce electricity, which then feeds the electric motor or charges the battery. This configuration often delivers a driving experience closer to that of an EV, with smoother acceleration and reduced reliance on mechanical drivetrain components.

By building the Kicks in Sunderland alongside the Leaf, Nissan keeps its European manufacturing footprint central to its product strategy. The move also reflects the brand’s willingness to offer multiple electrified options rather than betting exclusively on pure electric vehicles. For buyers not yet ready to go fully electric, the Kicks hybrid could serve as a bridge between traditional combustion and battery-powered driving.
