Nio to Build Shanghai Battery Plant in H2, Aiming at Advanced Cell Tech

Nio has confirmed plans to begin work on its Shanghai-based battery production facility during the second half of this year. The new site will be a hub for next-generation battery research and manufacturing, signaling the company’s commitment to vertical integration in its supply chain.

Once completed, the facility will include 31 dedicated laboratories for lithium battery testing, as well as a pilot line for lithium-ion cells and a separate battery pack assembly line. This setup is designed to accelerate Nio’s development of future battery chemistries and improve in-house testing capabilities.

The move comes as several Chinese electric vehicle makers are investing heavily in battery technology to reduce dependency on external suppliers and differentiate their offerings. Nio’s Shanghai project is expected to strengthen its position in the premium EV segment by enabling faster iteration of battery innovations.
